Trần Hồng Đức

The painter Trần Hồng Đức, born in 1960 in Hà Nội.
One of the most enduring and representative figures of contemporary art, Trần Hồng Đức has played an important part in shaping the face of Vietnamese abstract painting. His art is a singular visual universe, built from the energy of the brushstroke, a feeling for nature and a deep spirit of cultural exchange.
His paintings are like exploding symphonies of colour. Pure colour fields set side by side, with free, decisive strokes of the brush, create an intense contrast that in the end resolves into a “subtle harmony”.
Steadfastly casting off the limits of literal form, the abstract landscapes of his canvases still breathe with nature — where one may chance upon the quiet of Hà Nội’s streets or the turning of the four seasons, the echo of inner space and of dreams. All of it converges in his core philosophy: “Not to depict the scene, but to keep the feeling of it.”
The depth of his work lies in the balance he strikes in a dialogue between East and West: the expressive language of modern Western art reconciled with the stillness, contemplation and selflessness of Eastern philosophy — distilled into a distinctly “Vietnamese abstraction”.
Refusing linear storytelling, each of his paintings offers no ready-made answer. It is a plural space that gently invites us in, to converse freely and to awaken the deepest layers of memory and feeling within.
“I always look at the world around me as a whole, then distill what I see into my paintings to express my inner soul”
